The Best Dog Foods in Ireland: What We Actually Recommend Across the Counter

€1.41 a day is what it costs to feed a 20kg dog on Darf Beef cold-pressed. Price per bag hides the real figure: cost per day is what to compare.

There is no single best dog food in Ireland. Anyone who gives you one name without asking about your dog is selling you a brand. What there is, is a best food for your dog, at your budget, that your dog will actually eat and do well on.

I’ve spent twelve years behind the counter in Terenure, and most of the dog food conversations I have come down to the same four things: what your dog is like, what’s actually in the bag or box of food, how it was made, and what it costs per day rather than per bag. This guide works through those questions, then gives you the foods we recommend most often in each category, with honest notes on who each one suits.

If you’d like to talk it through for your own dog, book a free nutrition chat and I’ll go through it with you.

Our picks at a glance

How We Judge a Dog Food

These are the five checks I run on any food before it goes on our shelves, and the same checks I’d use on a bag in a supermarket.

  1. Is it complete? The label should say “complete” (a full diet), not “complementary” (a topper or treat). A complementary food fed on its own will leave gaps.
  2. Is a named meat first, and how much of it? “Chicken, 60%” tells you something. “Meat and animal derivatives” tells you very little. Fresh meat and meat meal are two different things, and good brands will openly say which they use.
  3. How was it made? Raw is uncooked and frozen. Cold-pressed is pressed at low temperature, so it keeps more of the nutritional value of what went into it. Regular kibble is usually extruded at high temperature. None of these processes is right or wrong, but they suit different dogs and owners in different ways.
  4. What makes up the rest of the ingredients? Grain-free is not automatically better, and grains are not automatically bad. What matters is whether the carbohydrate is there for the right reasons, and whether your dog actually digests it well.
  5. What does it cost per day, not per bag? A cheaper food that you have to feed more of can cost the same as, or even more than, a pricier one. The cost table further down works this out for a 20kg dog.

The last check is your dog. Firm stools, a good coat, steady energy and an empty bowl tell you more than any label.

Best Raw Dog Food in Ireland

Raw suits dogs with sensitive stomachs, itchy skin or fussy appetites, and owners who have freezer space and don’t mind handling raw meat with the same care as their own. It’s the category we sell most of, so these are the four I recommend most.

  • Best without veg

    Kaya Complete

    RawMulti-protein

Each recipe mixes several proteins in one pack. The Rabbit Mix, for example, combines rabbit, beef, lamb and goat at a 75/15/10 meat, bone and organ ratio. Any 22 x 1kg packs cost €118.95.

  • Best with veg

    Approved Raw

    RawMade in Ireland

Made in Ireland from Irish ingredients, fully licensed and fully traceable, and our best-selling range by a distance. The Duck & Veg Complete shows the approach: 70% minced Irish duck legs and carcass, 15% Irish beef liver and kidney, 10% broccoli and carrot, fish and flaxseed oils, and a seaweed supplement. There are recipes in beef, turkey, duck and venison as well as chicken, in 500g and 1kg packs, 5kg minces for bigger dogs, and 20kg mixed boxes for regular raw feeders.

  • Best single-protein

    Barkin Bistro

    RawMade in Ireland

Made in Ireland from locally sourced Irish ingredients. The Lamb Complete and Beef Complete are each one protein at an 80:10:10 meat, bone and organ ratio, which makes them a good choice for fussy dogs and sensitive tummies.

  • Best for Irish grass-fed meat

    Wilder Raw

    RawIrish meat

The Complete Mince+ range is built on Irish meat with no root vegetables: the Lamb & Duck recipe is 50% grass-fed Irish lamb and 46% duck, with broccoli, wheatgrass and kelp. The 18kg mixed box is €122.95.

Best Cold-Pressed Dog Food

Cold-pressed is the middle road: dry and easy to store like kibble, but pressed at 45–80°C rather than extruded at high heat, so, in theory, more of the meat’s goodness survives. It’s what I suggest for owners who want better than kibble but can’t give freezer space to raw.

  • Best overall

    Darf

    Cold-pressedBest value per day

Eleven recipes, from Original to Insect, and the best value food in this guide per day. Original is 60% meat and organs, with carrot, apple, a little millet, krill and coconut oil. Darf recipes contain a very small amount of millet, which is a grain (but not a bad one), so they are not grain-free; dogs that need strictly grain-free should look at the next two.

  • Best grain-free

    Ydolo

    Cold-pressedPuppy recipe

Five recipes, including a Puppy one, in 2.5kg and 10kg bags. The Wild Fish recipe is 75% fresh fish with sweet potato instead of grains, and no peas, potato or yeast.

  • Best for fresh meat content

    Alpha Spirit The Only One

    Cold-pressedGrain-free

Grain-free, in 3kg and 12kg bags. The Multi-Protein recipe uses 2.4kg of fresh meat and fish for every kilo of food.

  • Best gluten-free

    Primal Spirit

    Cold-pressed1kg trial bags

Also made by Alpha Spirit, from fresh meat and fish rather than meat meal. Wilderness is 60% fresh pork, chicken and fish, and Iberian Sardine and Iberian Pork suit dogs that do better without poultry. Primal Spirit contains rice, so it’s gluten-free rather than grain-free. The 1kg bags at €10.95 are an easy way to try a recipe before buying 12kg.

Best Dry Dog Food (Kibble)

Good kibble is still a sound choice, and for plenty of households it’s the right one. The difference between a good bag and a poor one is mostly what’s in it, and a good bag rarely costs much more per day.

Which Food for Which Dog?

Best Puppy Food in Ireland

Puppies need more energy, protein and the right balance of calcium for growing bones, so a food made for puppies matters more than the brand. Large and giant breeds need a large-breed puppy food, which controls growth rate. Most dogs move to adult food between 12 months (small breeds) and 18–24 months (giant breeds).

What It Actually Costs Per Day

Price per bag hides the real figure. Cold-pressed is fed in much smaller amounts than raw, so Darf in a 14kg bag works out at about €1.40 a day for a 20kg dog, while raw costs a little more than that. Here’s the comparison, using each maker’s feeding guide for a 20kg adult dog of normal activity and our current prices for the largest size.

Raw is fed at 2–3% of body weight a day; the table uses 2.5%. Your dog’s age, activity and weight goal change these amounts, so treat them as a starting point. For raw portions in detail, see how much raw food to feed your dog.

Switching Foods Without Upsetting Your Dog

Most tummy trouble after a change comes from changing too fast, not from the new food. For a move between dry foods, take about seven days:

  1. Days 1–2A quarter new food, three quarters old.
  2. Days 3–4Half and half.
  3. Days 5–6Three quarters new.
  4. Day 7All new food.

Slow down if stools go soft. Moving to raw works differently, and our step-by-step guide to switching your dog to raw explains how. Most Darf recipes come in a 500g sample bag from €4.95, which is a good way to check your dog likes it before buying a big bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best dog food in Ireland?

There isn’t one food that’s best for every dog. For most dogs we recommend Kaya Raw if you can feed raw, Darf for cold-pressed, and Kaya Grain Free for kibble. The right one depends on your dog’s age, size, digestion and your budget.

Is grain-free dog food better?

Not automatically. Grain-free helps some dogs with sensitive digestion or skin, but plenty of dogs do well on foods with grains such as rice or millet. Our guide to grain-free dog food in Ireland covers who it suits.

Is raw dog food safe?

Commercial complete raw food made under licence, like Kaya Raw and Approved Raw, is made to strict manufacturing rules. Handle it as you would raw meat: keep it frozen, defrost in the fridge, and wash hands and surfaces after use. Read more in is raw meat good for dogs.

What’s the best dog food for a sensitive stomach?

Start with a simple recipe with one main protein. Kaya Grain Free Lamb is our usual first suggestion in kibble; in raw, a single-protein recipe such as Kaya 100% Pure Rabbit. Change slowly, over about seven days.

How much should I spend on dog food?

Compare cost per day, not per bag. For a 20kg dog, good food in our shop runs from about €1.40 a day for Darf to about €3 a day for Approved Raw.

What is the best puppy food in Ireland?

A food made for puppies, and a large-breed puppy food for big breeds. We recommend Darf Puppy or Ydolo Puppy in cold-pressed, Kaya Grain Free Puppy in kibble, and all our raw options are suitable for puppies.

Do you deliver dog food across Ireland?

Yes. Order before 12pm, Monday to Thursday, for next-day delivery anywhere in Ireland, including Northern Ireland. Delivery is free on orders over €49.
